This stock certificate (numbered 1) was for the first 249 shares of 500 capital stocks issued for the "Bucher Memorial and Research Hospital of L'Anse, Michigan". The shares were valued at $100 each, making the certificate worth $24,900. That would equal about $451,000 today, quite a sizable sum. The certificate was signed on the back by the original owner but was never transferred.
The Bucher Memorial and Research Hospital was a precursor attempt at building a hospital in L'Anse before the Baraga County Memorial Hospital was built in 1951. I'm sorry, I do not know much more about the history of the hospitals beyond that.
I found this certificate at an estate sale, wedged between the pages of a book. I have it framed behind glass, as it's a significant piece of local history, and it is currently hanging on wall of my study. The certificate is in very good, well-preserved condition, with no holes, tears, or stains. The frame measures approximately 12" x 9.5", and is included for free.
