A fine early 20th Century French Art Deco period compact in silver gilt and black enamel. The exterior has black enamel all over the body. The top is set with a carved jade (jadeite) panel with what looks like a stylised bird. Flanking the panel are three diamonds to each side in a mill grain setting. The diamonds are rose cut typical of antique pieces.
The case is opened with a press button mechanism also set with jade. The interior features a mirror and a lift up compartment with a separate open compartment to the right. The interior is gilt washed. To the open area inside the case there are two marks, these are very indistinct due to poor stamping, however it appears to be the boars head for the French 800 silver standard and the maker's mark which begins with a J.
A very stylish piece of French Deco and particularly scarce with the jade and diamond setting.

Condition: Generally very good for period. Some wear to the gilt interior with the silver showing through in places. Some scuffing to the enamel on the base as expected. Two patches of slightly lighter colour in the black enamel to the top above and to the left of the jade panel visible at certain angles. This appears to be from production. Latch mechanism and hinge all working well.
