This large bulbous crystal vanity jar is in very good condition with no chips
or cracks. The hallmarked sterling silver lid has a few tiny dings consistent
with age and use. It is hallmarked for Chester 1912, putting it in the reign of
George V. The makers' initials, 'JD over WD' indicate the lid was produced
by James Deakin & Sons. There is an inscription etched on the lid - 'Meryl
Xmas 1914.' This date is especially poignant and important because it
marked a historical Christmas truce in WW1, when troops from both Britain
and Germany left their trenches, exchanged food and cigarettes, sang carols
and each buried their dead. This was the only time it happened during WW1.
