Wedgwood Portland Blue Jasperware Mantel Clock – Cherubs & Roman Elegance
This is a small but rather distinguished Wedgwood mantel or desk clock, rendered in Portland blue jasperware - that fine, unglazed stoneware perfected by Josiah Wedgwood in the 1770s and still synonymous with classical refinement.
The piece stands at about 3.5 inches tall, 3 inches wide and 1 inch deep, with weight of 140 grams. It’s stamped “Wedgwood, Made in England” on the reverse, along with the letters “DS”.
The front is adorned with a white bas-relief scene of cherubic putti - those playful, rotund figures so beloved of Renaissance and neoclassical art - cavorting in a celebratory frieze. Above the clock face, a daisy motif adds a gentle botanical flourish.
The clock itself is quartz-driven (and in working order, I’ve fitted a new battery today), with Roman numerals and a gold-tone bezel that lends a touch of Empire to the ensemble.
Wedgwood’s jasperware was once described by Kenneth Clark as “the purest expression of the classical spirit in English ceramics” - and this little timepiece carries that legacy with quiet dignity. It’s the sort of object that would not look out of place on the desk of a thoughtful antiquarian, or nestled among books and busts in a study where Cicero and Coleridge are equally welcome.
In good order with no damage. I have taken plenty of photos to allow you to judge the condition so please take a moment to study them too.
The approximate dimensions again are as follows: Height – 3.5 inches Width – 3 inches Depth – 1 inch Weight – 140 g
Shown with a bottle of Champagne to give you an idea of scale.
