Brilliant Thinkpad T420S 14.1 Inch Laptop with the excellent 1600 by 900 high resolution graphics lovely bright LED screen - First Class, top of the range laptop which is quickly becoming quite rare! The T420S is "related" to the classic T420 but in my opinion looks and feels more like the X300 / X301 family. It is slim, light and looks and feels really professional - one of the best Thinkpads ever. These are fabulous laptops and look great! The T400 range are still very much in use in business and industry - my own work laptop is a T420. This particular T420S laptop has 64 Bit Windows 10 Pro installed onto a Sandisk 128GB mSATA SSD and Linux Mint 22.2 loaded onto a 320GB Hitachi HDD. Refurbishment Program - Increase RAM to at least 2GB (8GB in this one)
- Wipe drives and perform a clean "bloatware-free" install of Linux Mint 64 Bit and W10 Pro
- Visual inspection of laptop for damage - repair or replace broken and missing parts as appropriate. Report items that are less than perfect
- Open the laptop and check all the internal connections
- Gently hoover dust from inside especially from fan / heatsink
- Remove the heatsink assembly. Clean off the old thermal paste and replace with new
- Carefully torque down the heatsink - check CPU core temperatures are well within safe range
- Clean keyboard with a toothbrush to remove all grease, hairs and fingerprints etc. (yuk)
- Clean exterior plastics and remove scratches with toothpaste (yes really!)
- Use touch-up pen on larger scratches and "back to black" wax for blemishes
- Clean screen with special LCD wipes
- Final clean and polish before listing on EBay!
- In my experience the biggest cause of failure for these Thinkpads is overheating caused by fan vents blocked up with fluff etc. or dried out thermal paste or BOTH! These issues are easily fixed by opening the laptop and removing the fan / heatsink assembly, giving it a good clean and lubrication and cleaning off / replacing the thermally conductive heat compound. These simple actions can add years to the life of your average laptop!!! Heat is the enemy! Good cooling is your friend. This laptop is now running at less than 55 degrees!! - I have recently been informed by Ebay that I am violating policy by installing Free software - without including the installation media - in other words the CD or DVD - for FREE software!! So for this reason I have to stop configuring my laptops with the useful free tools that the authors want you to have. However - feel free to contact me and I can advise you on FREE software - basically it's impossible for me to include these media because just about all software these days is downloadable straight from the net. Please accept my apologies for this change in configuration but it is outside of my control and I have no wish to go against Ebay policy.
You can always find cheaper similar laptops on EBay but you may struggle to find one of these classics. You can even buy a brand new (low spec) laptop from Comet etc. but please understand that I spend many hours on each project (see list above) and you will be getting a first class refurbished machine that will give you great service and if treated with care and respect will last many years. I am offering here a lovely looking Lenovo T420S laptop with the 14.1 inch wide 16:10 ratio screen format! This particular laptop has been well treated and it's in really nice condition! The battery on this particular laptop is an almost new OEM 44Wh slimline type with 43Wh remaining and should easily provide 1-2 hours of mobile computing - depending on the application. The T420S is a really lovely laptop and a significant improvement on the classic T61 and T400. The graphics are much improved and the screen brightness is very good. A fast WIFI link makes this model great for the internet and a clear bright 1600 by 900 pixel LED screen gives a marvellous viewing experience. All in all this laptop is perfect for just about any application and this one really is in great condition and it comes loaded with good software.
This is a lovely clean laptop with the usual excellent build quality. It's absolutely perfect for business use, or studying or just browsing the internet, playing music, movies etc. A great laptop to replace your ageing home computer? Unlike the X series (ultraportable) these laptops do actually have an integrated CD / DVD Drive. Expansion capability is provided by the "Docking Station" accessory (not included) which allows great port expansion - good ones can be bought on Ebay for about fifteen pounds (honestly). Alternatively with three built-in USB ports available, a variety of Flash Drives or external CD/DVD Readers or Writers can easily be connected - this laptop has the power to drive them all. The Laptop comes with a good OEM battery and also an AC power supply / charger block.
Note: Most of the pictures are of the item itself. My digital camera does not do the laptop any justice at all!" If you have a son or daughter returning to university soon (or yourself) then this is perfect - everything a student needs! This laptop is just ready to go out of the box.
I have cleaned the laptop inside and out and everything works perfectly as it should - the cooling fan / heatsink has been cleaned and new thermal paste has been applied; good cooling is important because there is a lot of power in these laptops. The Linux Mint / Windows 10 operating systems run great on these laptops and are "feature rich". There is nothing more that can be done to this computer except to turn it on and enjoy its great performance. The quality of Thinkpads speaks for itself and spare parts, memory and / or disk upgrades are readily available on EBay. Weighs just 1.8 Kg (!!) including the battery and when released these laptops sold for £2000 upwards (no kidding)!
Note: I always make a point of highlighting any problem areas. This laptop has nothing to report! Everything is present and working correctly. I am a qualified electronics / test engineer recently retired early from working in manufacturing and I really enjoy diagnosing and fixing Lenovo laptops. My "second job" is refurbishment and I pay great attention to detail. I do not sell on any laptop that I am not totally happy with. If I can make a small profit on each laptop then I can continue with this process. I am a one man band and do not compete with some of the larger sellers on Ebay - but I like to think I offer a personal service and I am always available to offer advice about laptops, electronics etc.
I have been asked by some buyers about warranty - well these laptops are over ten years old and still running well. As a sole trader I cannot really offer a comprehensive warranty it's not possible or practical. However if the laptop fails within 14 days through no fault of the buyer then of course I will consider repair or replacement. I will always offer a honourable solution. I can also often repair Thinkpad problems at a competitive rate.
This is another superb laptop for a fair price with lovely clear screen and good graphics. This is a powerful and fast machine with a good 2.50 GHz i5 Dual Core and 8GB of RAM, WIFI, webcam and Bluetooth - perfect for any home or office situation.
