This original watercolour, titled 'Star' and signed and dated May 1999 on the reverse, is by the British artist Derek Carruthers (1935–2021). The composition presents a radial formation of articulated artists’ mannequins, arranged around a central geometric star motif and viewed from an elevated perspective.
The mannequin figures extend outward in a carefully balanced, symmetrical configuration, their repeated forms creating a visual rhythm that emphasises unity, order and collective movement. The geometric structure beneath them provides both a literal and conceptual framework, reinforcing Carruthers’ enduring interest in systems, balance and organised human behaviour.
Executed in watercolour with fine linear definition and a restrained tonal palette, the work demonstrates Carruthers’ mature control of composition and structure during the late 1990s. The gradated background enhances the sense of depth while maintaining focus on the central, symbolic arrangement.
By 1999, Derek Carruthers had fully established his distinctive visual language based on articulated artists’ mannequins, forms he used extensively during his tenure as Head of Art at Durham University to teach structure, proportion and movement. In his own practice, these mannequins became anonymous stand-ins for humanity, enabling him to explore themes of cooperation, conformity and shared systems without reference to individual identity.
Carruthers was a respected figure within Modern British art, closely associated with mid-century developments in abstraction and structure. He was a contemporary and colleague of Victor Pasmore, with whom he shared intellectual and pedagogical connections during a formative period in British art education.
Purchased from the artist’s estate.
This is a refined and conceptually resolved work from Carruthers’ late-1990s period. The radial symmetry and star motif create a strong sense of order and cohesion, while the use of articulated artists’ mannequins reflects both his teaching practice and his mature artistic concerns. Works such as this, particularly with clear estate provenance and inscription, are increasingly appreciated within the context of serious Modern British figurative art.
