On January 1, 1977, the Houston Cougars defeated the undefeated Maryland Terrapins 30-21 

in the Cotton Bowl Classic, winning their first-ever Cotton Bowl title and finishing the season ranked #4 

in the nation. The Cougars, led by head coach Bill Yeoman, were a significant underdog against the #1 

ranked Maryland team, but achieved a major upset victory.
