"Astrodomain" deckled edge postcard showing both the Houston Astrodome and Colt Stadium!

ASTRODOME & COLT STADIUM

The Houston Astrodome and Colt Stadium, situated side by side in Houston, Texas, represent an intriguing chapter in the history of baseball and sports architecture. Colt Stadium, built in 1962, was the temporary home of the Houston Colt .45s, the city's first Major League Baseball team, which later became the Houston Astros. The stadium was a modest, open-air ballpark with a seating capacity of about 33,000. It was known for its intense summer heat and frequent mosquito infestations, making it a challenging environment for both players and fans. Despite its short-lived existence, Colt Stadium hosted some notable players, including Hall of Famers Joe Morgan and Rusty Staub, who began their careers with the Colt .45s.

Standing adjacent to Colt Stadium was the Astrodome, which opened in 1965 as the world’s first multi-purpose domed stadium, often dubbed the "Eighth Wonder of the World." The Astrodome was a revolutionary structure, featuring an air-conditioned environment, artificial turf (known as AstroTurf), and a seating capacity of over 66,000 for baseball. It became the new home of the Houston Astros, who transitioned from Colt Stadium to the Astrodome after its completion. The stadium also became home to the NFL's Houston Oilers and hosted a variety of other events, including rodeos, concerts, and political conventions.

During the brief period when both stadiums stood side by side, the contrast between them was striking: Colt Stadium was a temporary, utilitarian structure, while the Astrodome represented the future of sports venues with its cutting-edge design and technology. The Astrodome saw many baseball legends, including Nolan Ryan, who achieved multiple milestones there, and Mike Cuellar, who was a key pitcher for the Astros. Colt Stadium was eventually dismantled and sold, while the Astrodome became an enduring symbol of Houston’s ambition and innovation.
