WOW! Amazing replica of one of the most successful weapons of the WWII Air Assault on Germany! The Lancaster was nicknamed The "Lanc" and thus became onf of the more famous and most successful of the WWII night / heavy bombers. This terror in the sky dropped over 608,612 long tons of bombs in 156,000 sorties!!
This Model is from the RAF 617 Sqn known as the "Dambusters" - This plane was famous in WWI for the RAF, having flown with 18 other Avro Lancaster planes on May 16/17th 1943 - for "Operation Chastise" - which was one of the most daring raids of WW2 to destroy the dams in the Ruhr Valley in Germany's Industrial center.
The Lancaster with tail code AJ-N during the RAF's 617 Squadron Dambusters raid was piloted by Pilot Officer Leslie Gordon Knight.
Knight flew Lancaster ED912 AJ-N as part of the first wave of Operation Chastise on the night of May 16–17, 1943. His crew successfully breached the Eder Dam with their bouncing bomb and returned safely to base.
Knight was later awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his role in the raid. Sadly, he was killed in action just a few months later, on September 16, 1943.
