Rare 1890s Hotel Gerstenberg D.C. Triple Condiment Dish Bauscher Bros Germany

Extremely rare c. 1895 Bauscher Bros. Weiden Bavaria triple condiment dish – custom-made for Ernst Gerstenberg’s Hotel & Restaurant, Washington D.C.

This museum-quality piece features a sepia portrait of proprietor Ernst Gerstenberg, framed in ornate grapevine scrolls. The banner reads:

“Ernst Gerstenberg / Washington D.C.”

Historical Context:

Gerstenberg’s Hotel & Restaurant (1887–1917) was a German-American landmark on D.C.’s “Rum Row,” famed for steins, sausages, and live music. It closed in 1917 amid WWI anti-German backlash and Prohibition.

Maker:

Bauscher Bros. (Gebrüder Bauscher), Weiden, Bavaria – pioneers of professional hotel porcelain. Early U.S. export mark:

“BAUSCHER BROS / WEIDEN / (BAVARIA) / MADE IN GERMANY”

Key Details:

• Era: 1895–1900

•  Measures about 2 5/16" tall x 5 1/4" at its widest. 

Rarity:

Only known example of this custom Gerstenberg design. Bauscher produced limited runs for elite U.S. clients; few survive.
