Comments: This record was fully play tested after it was cleaned. Unfortunately, some inappropriate storage added a warp to this record. The record contains great music and is in otherwise real-nice condition. What to do? I couldn't just toss out a record with good music without giving it a chance to succeed in a new home.
This disc played well and sounded great on my record player. It being offered as-is, but hopefully described well enough for decision making. You'll have to decide if you feel reasonably confident that you can play this on your record player too. If you don't think your record player tone arm can ride the warp, then you probably should skip this record (unless you plan to de-warp it). The video included in the photos section shows a sample of the record playing so you can see how the warp affect the tone arm and hear how good the music sounds nonetheless. One thing is for sure: I wouldn't put the needle down on a warped record while it is spinning - it might bounce off before sliding into the groove. Play should start with the needle sitting on a stationary record.
Record Condition (For the Eyes): The surfaces are glossy with numerous surface scuffs and a few light scratches. There are some little shellac pimples here and there. There is that loose warp that was previously mentioned. I gave the disc a grade of E-.
Record Condition (For the Ears): The sound quality is excellent. General background record surface noise is mild with some background ticks. Occasionally, but not often, some mild distortion is heard at loudness peaks. The music is easy to enjoy and the listen was satisfying. (I play-test on a Newcomb school-style phonograph with a 3 mil stylus.)
Sound Sample: There is a short sound sample video in the photos section. The video shows about a minute of each side. Sure, you can hear some of the music to judge the sound quality for yourself, but you should really watch the interaction between the record and the tone arm. The video tells a big story.
Labels Condition: The labels look good with only light wear. There is no writing or stickers on the labels The text is easy to read and the label graphics look great.
Sleeve Type and Condition: The record is in new Bags Unlimited white kraft-paper sleeve which is in excellent condition.
Please see the photos for more info and a look at condition. Use your zoom-in powers for a real close look. The glossiness of the record tends to hide some of the lighter scuff marks in my photos.
Shipping Notes: I'm an expert record packer, if I do say so myself! Rest assured that I know what I'm doing when it comes to packing shellac records for safe shipping. SPECIAL PACKING STATEMENT: Because putting too much pressure on warped records can lead to breakage, this record will be packed in a special way. Normally I pack 78s tightly between layers of stiff cardboard, but trying to force a warped record into a tightly compressed sandwich could be asking for trouble (breakage). This record will be double boxed. The inner box will contain the record, padded with layers of bubble wrap. The record will be secure, but won't be compressed. The crush resistant inner box will be placed in a bigger box with padding all around. This way, the record can ride easy and the double boxing will provide the strength needed to prevent breakage.
