Nonlinear Response of flexible shell/membrane structures to blast load

by Hitesh Kapoor

This research work presents the finite element (FE)modeling and dynamic response of Inflatable, thin, highly flexible shell/membrane structures to blastload, with application to collective protectionsystems. Temper Tents have pressurized CollectiveProtection System (CPS)(liner system), fitted toframe structures, provide protection againstexplosives and other harmful agents. These systemsare being tested for the force protection standardsagainst the explosions like air-blast.A nonlinear finite element analysis of shell/membranestructure is sought to computationally simulate theresponse of Temper tents. ANSYS, a commercial finiteelement software, is used here for this static and transient analysis is performedand dynamic response in terms of displacement historyand dynamic stresses is computed. Designconsiderations are made based on the parametricdesign study.

Publisher Description

This research work presents the finite element (FE) modeling and dynamic response of Inflatable, thin, highly flexible shell/membrane structures to blast load, with application to collective protection systems. Temper Tents have pressurized Collective Protection System (CPS)(liner system), fitted to frame structures, provide protection against explosives and other harmful agents. These systems are being tested for the force protection standards against the explosions like air-blast. A nonlinear finite element analysis of shell/membrane structure is sought to computationally simulate the response of Temper tents. ANSYS, a commercial finite element software, is used here for this purpose. Nonlinear static and transient analysis is performed and dynamic response in terms of displacement history and dynamic stresses is computed. Design considerations are made based on the parametric design study.
