What are Stamp Varieties & Flaws?
A variety is something that typically differs in some discernible detail from others of the same kind.
Varieties, also called Flaws, are sold as ‘normal’ postage stamps & the details of what makes them ‘differ’ discernibly is picked-up by astute philatelists. Varieties are caused by a traceable reason eg, scratched plate, tiny indent that creates a line or spot of colour, misalignment of paper when perforating stamps, change in ink or paper-types, wear-&-tear on printing presses ... The printer may be aware of the issue & attempt to fix the problem or cover it up (a ‘re-touch’).
Some Varieties are Constant, that is they appear on a certain stamp in the same place on multiple sheets of stamps. Other Varieties may not be constant, one-offs in other words, due to mistakes such as dirty printing equipment, pre-printing paper folds, or foreign matter falling onto the printing presses.
What are Stamp Errors?
Errors, tend to be Major Varieties. Errors are inconstant, perhaps unique Varieties that were created unintentionally yet managed to find their way through to retail sales outlets. Errors are usually blunders in the printing process such as misplaced perforations, inverted parts of the design, printing on the gummed-side of the paper, colour or text omissions, wrong denominations ...
Searching for, & finding Stamp Varieties, Flaws & Errors is a wonderful & profitable pastime!
