*** CARVED CHINESE BAMBOO BRUSH POT w BUDAI ***

1900-1949

Chinese stained bamboo brush pot carved in high relief
with figure of Budai (Laughing Buddha) seated
with children at play,
against an openwork backdrop of an architectural pavilion
with tiled roof, pierced screens, and draped banners,
as well as bamboo stalks and naturalistic details on the reverse.
Appears unsigned.

While brush pots were originally refined literati items
of a Qing scholar's studio, later examples in the early 1900's
adopted more popular and auspicious imagery
with Budai (laughing Buddha) symbolizing happiness & prosperity.
