Full two volume work bound in four matching parts. Title pages for both volumes, prelims and indices are bound at the rear of part four. Plates are bound at the front of each part (not as the 'directions to binder'). There are 30 of the listed 31 plates present including a map of County Durham plus 3 non-listed additional plates (additional view of Ravensworth Castle, Jarrow Church, Vale of St. John). The plate not present is a portrait of Thomas Bewick.
The four volumes have been re-backed with original covers and original back strips laid on the spines. Spines are sunned and covers are lightly marked but gilt lettering and ornate decoration largely remains bright. All volumes have new end-papers. Sound binding, clean pages and plates.
