Little Archduchess Sophie Sophie was the first child of Emperor Franz Josef and Elisabeth of Austria. She was named after her grandmother, the Empress Archduchess Sophie. On a trip to Hungary, to which Empress Elisabeth also took her two daughters Sophie and Gisela, the two sisters fell ill with diarrhea. While the younger Gisela recovered quickly, little Sophie grew weaker and weaker until she finally passed away. She was two years old. Later it was assumed that not diarrhea and fever, but typhus was to blame for her early death. Sophie Friederike von Austria was buried in the Capuchin Crypt in Vienna.
