Dune is a science fiction universe that originated with the 1965 novel Dune by Frank Herbert. Dune is frequently cited as the best-selling science fiction novel in history. It won the 1966 Hugo Award and the inaugural Nebula Award for Best Novel, and was later adapted into a 1984 film (directed by David Lynch and starring Kyle MacLachlan, Patrick Stewart, Brad Dourif and Sean Young), as well as a 2000 television miniseries. Herbert wrote five sequels, and the first two were presented as a miniseries in 2003. The Dune universe has also inspired some traditional games and a series of video games. Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Blade Runner 2049) has released yet another version!

Fear is the Mind Killer: the beginning of the Litany Against Fear, a mnemonic device that the Bene Gesserit use to (a) recognize that they are afraid (b) allow their fear to recede from them before they act based on that fear.

The full litany is:

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
