Condition:
This is a new (hand assembled) MSM RAM XPI board for older UNISITE
programmers. With this board in place the system boots in about 40 to 50
seconds not including self test time. No
more floppy disks needed except to copy your UNISITE software to the
flash
drive. The flash drive comes pre-formatted with the required C, D, H,
and I partitions. Instructions are in the UNISITE
XPI manual. The board was tested with Version 9.4 of the UNISITE
software. The MSM and RAM also work with other versions of the software. Versions between 5.1 and 9.4 may have different results. The MSM self test passes on power up but will not pass if manually initiated from the self test menu.
Once run from the menu, the MSM is disabled and the system must be
rebooted. This is the only known issue with this board and may be due to
being used in an older UNISITE not designed to support the MSM.
You
will have to transfer your software to the MSM by booting from floppy
and copying the software (see the UNISITE manual for instructions).
There are also instructions on line in the DATA I/O forum at Groups.IO.
The following disassembly is a complex process for a complex instrument.
If it is not done correctly the UNISITE or the RAM MSM XPI board may be damaged.
Pictures in the listing that support the installation instructions show an older 1MB version of the board.
Remove any programming adapters before disassembly
To install the board:
1.
Remove the UNISITE top cover by removing the screws in the back that
attach the cover.
Pull up on the back side of the cover to remove it.
2. Install the new PROMS and PALs supplied, U60 (EPROM Low Byte), U61 (EPROM High Byte), U91 PAL, and U92 PAL.
3. Remove all of the pin driver boards and disconnect the power supply connector from the main board.
4.
Remove the screws holding the main board to the chassis.
Then remove
the guide posts from the two brown connectors in the middle of the
board.
These connectors are for the programming adapters.
5. Disconnect the floppy disk and expansion board connectors from the front of the main board.
6.
Remove the main board from the chassis by lifting up at the front and
pulling forward to disconnect it from
the board at the back of the
programmer.
7. Remove the 4 screws that are holding the expansion RAM board in place and disconnect the board from the ribbon cable.
Put the Expansion RAM board aside, it is no longer needed.
8. Plug the connector that was on the expansion RAM board end of the ribbon cable into the new RAM MSM board.
At this point the system can be tested by replacing the main board in
the unit, and securing it with two screws in the rear.
Re-install some of the pin drivers on the main board (I think 8 is enough) or less if that is all you have.
Reconnect the power connector.
Plug the floppy drive connector and the expansion board connector into the main board.
Install
the 48 pin DIP socket adapter on the left side.
The latches in the front of
the adapter will rest on the ribbon cable connector.
The MSM RAM XPI board can now be laid over the top of the DIP adapter. See the last picture in the listing.
Make sure the release lever on the socket is down.
Boot the system from Floppy Disk (or from the MSM if the OS is pre-installed).
When satisfied that the system is functional undo the above steps to restore the system to Step 8.
9. Attach the MSM board to the standoffs and the bracket using the screws removed previously from the expansion RAM board.
Note, this version of the MSM board mounts with the parts facing up.
10. Re-assemble the UNISITE in the reverse order.
11. You will have to
transfer your software to the MSM by booting from floppy and copying the
software.
See the UNISITE XPI manual for instructions.
There also instructions on line in the DATA I/O Group at Groups.IO.
12. Once everything is programmed and working, replace the top cover in reverse order from step 1.
The UNISITE software must be version 5.1 or later to use the MSM.
These boards were tested in a UNISITE with version 9.4.
