Republic Period - Early 20th C

Of cylindrical form, stained reddish brown,

Carved from a single section of bamboo.

Carved in relief with a continuous scene of bamboo

and rock work, with a robed figure and boat.

The reverse carved with pine trees, a robed figure and boat.

All framed within vertical panels.

The upper rim decorated with a key-fret (leiwen) border.

Four character inscription on the obverse: (zu liang zhu jing)

meaning: a cool bamboo path beneath the feet,

below the inscription is a carved seal mark.

On the obverse four character inscription: (Song bai chang qing)

meaning: May the pine and cypress stay evergreen.

Brush pots of this type were popular scholar's studio objects, 

as well as made for the Western export market,

embodying literati ideals of retirement, purity and nature

through bamboo imagery, while pines and cypresses

symbolize longevity, steadfastness, and resilience.

Condition: good, with some age related cracks.
