Old Captain Taylor (Dr. Seuss - Theodor Geisel). The Log Of The Good Ship. Esso: Standard Oil, 1947.
FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 1 vol., 10" x 8", 36pp., pictorial wrappers, stapled, illustrated by Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel) in blue and red throughout. Slight toning to covers, hinges fine, some minor straining to portrait on front cover, internally clean, bright, and unused, overall A VERY GOOD+ COPY of an exceedingly scarce Seuss item.

An "illuminated" ship's log with jaunty marketer's text by Esso (formerly Standard Oil, later Exxon). Issued nearly two decades before Seuss would become a household name, he illustrated advertisements for various companies including Ford, NBC, and Standard Oil. This postwar follow-up to Esso's two previous SECRETS OF THE DEEP, likewise written by Seuss as "Old Captain Taylor," rises above its petroleum-advertising origins by virtue of Seuss's charming and playful illustrations, typical of his best advertising work.
