Variegated Red Twig Dogwood - Cornus alba 'Elegantissima' - Stunning Shrub for UK Gardens

The Variegated Red Twig Dogwood, Cornus alba 'Elegantissima', is a compact, bushy shrub with stunning variegated foliage and vibrant red or coral-pink stems that provide year-round interest in UK gardens.

The Variegated Red Twig Dogwood, scientifically known as Cornus alba ‘Elegantissima’, is a striking and versatile shrub that adds year-round interest to any garden. Reaching a height of 1.5-2.5 metres, this compact and bushy variety boasts vibrant, variegated foliage that transforms throughout the seasons.

In spring, the leaves emerge with a stunning combination of green, white, and pink hues, creating a beautiful contrast. As summer approaches, the foliage matures to a rich, dark green, with creamy-white edges that provide a delicate and elegant appearance. In autumn, the leaves put on a dazzling display, turning shades of red, orange, and purple before gracefully falling to the ground.

The real showstopper, however, is the plant’s colourful stems. During the winter months, the bare branches transform into a brilliant display of bright red or coral-pink twigs, creating a stunning focal point in the garden. This winter interest makes the Variegated Red Twig Dogwood a popular choice for adding year-round visual appeal.

Adaptable and easy to grow, this hardy shrub thrives in a wide range of soil types and conditions, making it a versatile choice for UK gardens. It performs best in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil, but can also tolerate drier conditions once established.

To maintain the plant’s vibrant colouration and compact shape, regular pruning is recommended. Cutting the stems back to the ground in late winter or early spring will encourage the growth of new, brightly coloured shoots, ensuring a stunning display for the coming year.

Care Guide for UK Gardeners

The Variegated Red Twig Dogwood is a low-maintenance and hardy shrub that can thrive in a variety of UK garden settings. To ensure its best performance, follow these simple care tips:

Planting: Choose a well-drained location in full sun to partial shade. Amend the soil with compost or well-rotted manure to improve fertility and drainage.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the first year after planting. Established plants are more drought-tolerant but will benefit from regular watering during dry spells.

Pruning: Prune the plant in late winter or early spring, cutting the stems back to the ground or to just above a set of healthy buds. This will encourage the growth of new, brightly coloured shoots.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth and vibrant foliage and stems.

Winter Protection: In areas with harsh winters, consider mulching the base of the plant with a layer of organic material, such as bark or straw, to protect the roots.
