CIVIC CENTRE ARENA
The Ottawa Civic Centre Arena, located in Ottawa, Ontario, is a historic indoor sports venue that served as the first home of the NHL’s modern Ottawa Senators. Opened in 1967 as part of the larger Lansdowne Park complex, the arena originally seated approximately 10,500 fans and boasted a unique, partially subterranean design. Its construction coincided with Canada’s centennial celebrations, making it an important cultural and architectural landmark for the city.
The Civic Centre gained prominence in 1992 when the Ottawa Senators were granted an NHL franchise. The team played its home games there during its early years, from 1992 to 1996, before moving to the larger, purpose-built Canadian Tire Centre. Despite its limited capacity and older infrastructure, the Civic Centre provided a spirited and intimate atmosphere for fans, establishing a strong local following for the new franchise.
Over the years, the Civic Centre has hosted a variety of other hockey teams, both before and after the Senators' tenure. The Ottawa 67’s, a major junior hockey team in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), have been the arena's longest-standing tenants, playing there since its opening. The 67’s have a rich history, producing many NHL stars and enjoying strong community support. Additionally, the venue has been a site for international hockey tournaments, concerts, and other major events.
Today, the arena is officially named TD Place Arena and continues to serve as the home of the Ottawa 67’s. While it no longer hosts NHL games, its legacy as the cradle of modern Senators hockey and a cornerstone of Ottawa's sports culture remains firmly intact.
