Hurricane Katrina, which struck the Gulf Coast in August 2005, was one of the deadliest and most destructive hurricanes in U.S. history. The storm caused catastrophic flooding in New Orleans after levees failed, submerging large parts of the city. The Mercedes-Benz Superdome, home of the NFL’s New Orleans Saints, became a shelter of last resort for thousands of displaced residents.

The Superdome is primarily home to the NFL's New Orleans Saints and the Sugar Bowl college football game. It is also one of the few facilities in the United States which can adequately host major sporting events such as the Super Bowl and the Final Four; as such, given New Orleans popularity as a tourist destination, whenever the Superdome bids to host such an event it routinely makes the "short list" of candidates being considered.
