In 2009, The Native American $1 Coin Act mandated three new reverse designs for the Sacagawea coins.

These coins had for the first time the year of minting and mintmark struck on the edge.

Sacagawea dollars have a pure copper inner core and an outer layer made of 77% copper, 12% zinc, 7% manganese and 4% nickel.

The coins measure 26.5 mm in diameter and each weighs 8.1 grams.

Sacagawea dollars were coined at the Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco Mints.
