Upper Cretaceous 99-65 Million Years old

Pycnodontiforms are an extinct group of ray-finned fishes (class Actinopterygii) that included the genus Pycnodus. They thrived in the Jurassic seas around 200 to 146 million years ago and were typically small to medium-sized, with deep, laterally compressed bodies that gave them a nearly circular shape. Most Pycnodontiform fishes lived in shallow marine environments, where their unique jaws—equipped with round, flattened teeth—allowed them to crush hard-shelled prey. Some species also adapted to river habitats, likely feeding on mollusks, crustaceans, and other shelled organisms.

Found in rock formations in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North and South America.
