“The Embroidered Banner, and Other Marvels”, by Lieut.-Colonel Hort, with Eight Coloured Steel Etchings by Alfred Ashley, was published in London in 1850 by John & Daniel A. Darling, Bishopgate Street. and printed by Darling & Son, Printers, 31, Leadenhall Street. The book, which measures approximately 6 x 9 inches, contains 288 pages containing the nine stories included in the book, plus an additional eight pages for the steel etchings (each etching also has its original tissue guard sheets), and more unpaginated sheets before and after the tales. The book was bound by Zaehnsdorf in full tan calf, with spine hubs and panel decoration. The original spine and covers are bound in at back. The pages are very lightly tanned, several of the etchings are detached, and there are signs of wear on the spine and edges of the cover. A publisher’s catalogue and ads, present after all the text in some other printings of the book, do not appear in this copy. Other than these shortcomings, the book is in good condition.
The illustrations accompanying this description show the book’s cover, the Title page, the etching associated with the Title page, the first page of the story The Malaga Assassins, and the etching associated with The Malaga Assassins.
