Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) paint protection film (PPF) is known for its durability, flexibility, and self-healing properties, making it one of the most popular choices for vehicle protection. When evaluating the quality of TPU PPF, here are key factors to consider:

  1. Thickness: High-quality PPF is typically 6-8 mils thick, which offers a balance between protection and flexibility. Thicker films may provide better protection but can be harder to apply on complex surfaces.

  2. Self-Healing Properties: One of the standout features of TPU PPF is its ability to "self-heal" minor scratches and swirls with heat (from the sun or warm water). The higher the quality, the faster and more effectively it can heal.

  3. Optical Clarity: High-end TPU PPF should be nearly invisible once applied, with minimal orange peel effect (textured surface) or distortion. The best films enhance the car’s gloss or maintain its matte finish without sacrificing clarity.

  4. UV Resistance: Quality PPF offers UV resistance, protecting the car’s paint from yellowing or fading over time.

  5. Hydrophobic Coating: Many premium TPU PPFs come with a hydrophobic (water-repellent) top layer that helps keep the car cleaner and makes it easier to wash. This coating can also protect against stains from bird droppings, bugs, and tree sap.

  6. Adhesive Quality: A good TPU PPF will have a high-quality adhesive that provides a strong bond to the surface without damaging the paint or leaving residue when removed.

1. Slip Solution

The slip solution allows you to position the PPF on the surface before it sticks too much. It keeps the adhesive from grabbing right away, giving you the flexibility to align the film properly.

How to Make Slip Solution:

  • Ingredients: Distilled water and baby shampoo (without conditioners) or a mild dish soap like Johnson’s Baby Shampoo or Dawn.
  • Mixing Ratio: Generally, mix 5-10 drops of shampoo per 32 ounces (1 quart) of distilled water.
  • Application: Use a spray bottle to apply the slip solution to both the adhesive side of the PPF and the car surface. This allows you to slide the film into place easily.

2. Tack Solution

The tack solution helps when you need the film to stick in specific areas, especially on edges or corners, or to remove air pockets. It's useful when working with curved or complex surfaces that require the PPF to grab and stay in place once aligned.

How to Make Tack Solution:

  • Ingredients: Distilled water and isopropyl alcohol (IPA).
  • Mixing Ratio: A common ratio is 70% distilled water and 30% IPA (or a 70/30 IPA solution if available).
  • Application: Use this solution around edges, on areas where you need a stronger initial grip, or to finish the application after positioning the film with the slip solution.

Other Tools You’ll Need:

  • Spray Bottles: One for slip solution and one for tack solution.
  • Squeegee: Use a soft squeegee to apply pressure and remove air bubbles.
  • Heat Gun: To aid in conforming the film to curves or for self-healing minor scratches.
  • Lint-Free Towels: For drying and cleaning the surface before and after installation.
