an old, carved wooden divination vessel with lid and a seated figure, known as 

a mouse oracle box with two compartments and a mouse hole, a:

 GBéKRé Sé

from the Baule / Baoule / Bawule People, Cote d'Ivoire, Africa,

the former owner stated on a leaflet that this Gbekre Se comes from the

school of Bouake, Aitu / Atutu region,

it has a dark patina with dirty and encrusted surface,

the lid is engraved with geometric decor and only closes in one position,

the body of the vessel has carved decoration of two masks, 

rectangular panels, two triangular shaped figures,

around the upper rim is an old, hardened leather strap, fastened with nails, 

at the top of the head a iron rod piece, between the feet are three nails, 

the box is raised from the ground,

with to the side four open spaces "to able the mouse to touch the ground"

the nails of the metal bottom plate are still present,

to the front of the box is a seated male figure with his hands on his knees, a beard and goatee and scarifications marks on the temples, between the eyebrows, to the side of the neck and on the upperarms,

age: early to mid 20th Century

condition: signs of age, use and handling, stable, some wood cracks, scratches, chips and dents,
