an old African tribal art mask, known as: 

Mfon Ekpo of the Ibibio People, Nigeria

the characters of the Ibibio Ekpo society mainly show two groups: 

masks of evil spirits, known as Idiok and

masks which represent the good spirits from paradise, known as Mfon, 

representing a deceased person who led a good, moral life, 

opposed to the wilder Idiok masks that represent a person whose evil deeds have caused him to become a ghost,

this mask is made of lightweight wood, coloured black 

and it has a flat border,

with a 3-lobbed coiffure and scarification marks on the forehead and cheeks,

age: probably first half of the 20th Century

condition: signs of age and handling - scratches, dents, some loses, but firm wood,

provenance: a private collection from The Netherlands, collected since 1960

height: circa 27,5 cm / circa 10.8 inch

width: circa 17,5 cm / 6.8 inch

weight: circa 330 gr.
