About Aizu Lacquerware
Lacquerware made in the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture. Also called Aizu lacquerware.
Aizu-nuri, made using traditional techniques handed down from the Edo period, is characterized by its robust lacquer coating and elegant designs such as chinkin, shu-nuri, and maki-e (gold-relief lacquering). In particular, lacquer painting called "Aizu-e" is unique to Aizu, in which a brush is dipped into colored lacquer and patterns are painstakingly drawn.
Aizu-nuri was designated as a "traditional craft" by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry in 1975.
