Buster Brown Visits Zoo Talks to Stork, Race Comic 1903
Here up for sale is an important Buster Brown comic titled 'Buster Brown Visits the Zoo and Talks to the Stork', and is dated 1903. It is in rough and delicate condition as shown with numerous tears and some tape on the back, with tape marks showing through to the front surface but it's a surviving early example nonetheless. It is by the comic originator Richard Outcault, who was sometimes referred to as the 'father of the comic strip', and his comics often reflected relevant social issues.
This comic deals with a public issue at that time, in that whites risked committing 'race suicide' by using birth control, from the increase in population due to immigration. Buster goes to the zoo and asks a stork for a baby sister. The stork delivers the baby to Buster's mom, but she doesn't want it. But Buster comes to the rescue and offers to take care of the baby. Buster concludes the comic by saying "That now I understand the great gravity of this race suicide question. Society is in a beautiful attitude toward posterity. Goodness!! What are we coming to?"..."I am going to feed this baby on the milk of human kindness".
