 Title: Rare Stucco Fragmented Head of a Sukhothai Buddha, Ayutthaya Period. 13/14th C. North-Central Thailand.
Description:x An exquisite and extremely rare 13th to 14th century Ayutthaya period Stucco Head of a Sukhothai Buddha, from a temple precinct in the Sukhothai province of Thailand, elegantly modeled with prominently delineated features characteristic of the school of Sukhothai . A fragmented section sensitively carved in exalted human form, with a serene facial expression, heavily laden meditative eyes partially open, arched eyebrows connect above a prominent nose, with broad fleshy lips slightly recessed at the corners. The curvature of the mouth establishes the images gentle and compassionate expression. The head is smooth, without delineation, rising up to a gently domed Ushnisha, featuring a hole at the top where a removable flame ornament finial would have been inserted.
xxxxxx Originally modeled as a full figured image, this fragmented portion is an excellent example of Sukhothai artistry and iconographic styling of the period, rendered from hand-molded stucco of a off-pink colour, originally sun dried, then oven-baked in a low temperature kiln. The surface shows remnants of painted black lacquer pigment, and with some discoloration.xxxxxxThe piece reveals a well-weathered and worn surface, unaltered, with no condition issues, with the exception of obvious incidentals, such as, minor loss to the face, head, hair-curls and earlobes. Other minor surface degradation, chips, dents, and evidence of selective erosion over time, are a normal part of the sculptures patina, attesting to the age of the piece as maintained.
Image Details:x Buddha's contoured face is rendered with a serene contemplative expression, with open eyes, ridged eyebrows connect above a prominent nose, wide full-rimmed lips, and elongated earlobes. The head is covered by large snail-shell hair curls, whorled, surmounted by a domed ushnisha, with ornamentation.
XXX Hand-carved of Stucco, the surface has a traces of black lacquer pigment, encrusted with soil, and oxidation. This skillfully executed image is a superb example of the Sukhothai artistry produced during the Ayutthaya period. Its creator has modeled a gracious interpretation of this divine iconic in human form with lively imagination and conviction.
