The strange affliction of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark (Occasional Paper, Vol. 3)

Introduction: 'A couple of years ago. Professor Bruce Bain, from the University of Alberta, Canada, suggested that I should write a small, half-hour 'skit' for the 54rd Annual Convention of the International Council of Psychologists, which was to be held in Banff. Canada, in July, 1996. Although intimidated by the idea. it took root. and I set to work on it in my spare moments. As the work progressed, the skit turned into a play, first a one-act play. and as the time approached for the Conference, into a two-act play. It was performed in a shortened form at the Banff Convention Centre on 28th July, 1996.

Emboldened by the response to the play. I submitted a revised version to the British Psychological Society, Division of Counselling Psychology, for their consideration at their First International Conference in Stratford-Upon-Avon in May, 1997. It was due largely to the continuous encouragement of Stephen Palmer that 1 extended the play and introduced some changes in it which the members of the Division of Counselling Psychology should have no difficulty in identifying. Stephen Palmer is nothing if not persistent! I owe him an irredeemable debt of gratitude. The play is concerned with the theme of mental illness, its definition, diagnosis, and its treatment. It uses Hamlet as the central character around whom all the arguments, discussions, and debates revolve. I have taken the liberty of Juxtaposing the past with the present, by inviting the dead with the living, and I sincerely hope the purists amongst you will forgive me for these outrageous liberties.'
