 Title: Chinese Wanli Porcelain Feline 'Doucai' Bowl. Ming Dynasty 16th Century.
Description: An exceptional Chinese Porcelain Bowl from the Wanli period, beautifully decorated using the 'Doucai'(tou-ts-ai)technique. The bowl is thinly potted with a flared rim tapering down to a short foot rim, and decorated in a motif of Felines. The bowl is intricately designed and hand-painted in a rotating scene of three cats seated in contentment and outlined in underglazed blue and painted (wash over) in liver-red overglazed enamels.XXX The interiors upper portion of the bowl was created with a continuous band of floral scrolls at the inverted rim, painted in liver-red and underglazed blue. The central roundel is consistant in design with a seated felines, and is highly detailed in underglazed blue.
XXX The base of the bowl bears the six-character Wanli mark (and of period) within a double circle, of underglazed blue (1573-1619). Ming Dynasty
XXX This skillfully executed bowl consist of a high-quality paste relitively thin walled, with a high pitch ringing sound when tapped. The powdered cobalt used, has a strong and vibrant tone of blue. The bowl is a superb example of the "Doucai" technique used to decorate Chinese porcelain during the Wanli period. The artistry produced during this period was amazing with highly detailed subject matter. Its creator has modeled a gracious interpretation with lively imagination and conviction.
