Alice Eichholz, ed., Ancestry Pub., Salt Lake City, 1992
858 pp, index, 8.5" x 11" red boards, clean & tight.
Over 30 years ago when I started the endless quest of documenting my family genealogy it was suggested I read a general overall guide to genealogy. I picked up a copy of Doane's work and devoured the book. Research guides are tools all genealogist should have in their library. When the day comes, and it will, when you hit a brick wall the guide may provide a clue to a record which you did not realize existed that may get you over the wall. They will also help avoid the common mistakes which plague many online genealogies by addressing the reliability of sources and proper documentation. You should not leave home without one!
From Amazon - "No scholarly reference library is complete without a copy of Ancestry's Red Book. In it, you will find both general and specific information essential to researchers of American records. This edition provides county and town listings within the same overall state-by-state organization. Whether you are looking for your ancestors in the northeastern states, the South, the West, or somewhere in the middle, ""Ancestry's Red Book has information on records and holdings for every county in the United States, as well as excellent maps from renowned mapmaker William Dollarhide. In short, the ""Red Book is simply the book that no genealogist can afford not to have. The availability of census records such as federal, state, and territorial census reports is covered in detail. Unlike the federal census, state and territorial census were taken at different times and different questions were asked. Vital records are also discussed, including when and where they were kept."

Madigan's Books was established in 1985 and is a mail order book business dealing only in books of genealogical interest. The books we carry will vary from rare antiquarian books to used copies of books still in print. We usually have only one copy of a book in stock and we do not limit our stock to any one geographical area. As one would expect we carry census, vital and courthouse records, county, town and family histories, directories and plat books. Also you may find listed town view or promotional booklets, Congressional records, Church records, military records or society quarterlies. The books we stock are based on over 30 years of doing genealogical research. If a book has information which will help to extend a family lineage or flesh out the history of an ancestor I will add it to stock.
If you are interested in books of genealogical interest examine the Ebay Store of Madigan's Books to view other genealogy and local history books & CDs.
