GIBRALTAR PHILATELIC HQ (GI05) - STRIPS - 2022

The NEW  'EUROPA 2022' STAMP - FIRST DAY ISSUE

The Royal Gibraltar Post Office launched the new Europa stamps, featuring Stories and Myths on the 5th September 2022.

The Pillars of Hercules is the ancient name given to the promontories that flank the entrance to the Straits of Gibraltar. The Northern Pillar is the Rock of Gibraltar and the Southern Pillar, Abila Mons, has been disputed throughout history, with the two most likely candidates being Monte Hacho in Ceuta and Jebel Musa in Morocco.

According to Greek mythology adopted by the Etruscans and Romans, when Hercules had to perform twelve labours, one of them (the tenth) was to fetch the Cattle of Geryon of the far West and bring them to Eurystheus; this marked the westward extent of his travels. Alost passage of Pindar quoted by Strabo was the earliest traceable reference in the context: The pillars which pindar calls the - Gates of Gades  when he asserts that they are the farthermost limits reached by Heracles. SInce there has been a one-to-one association between Hercules and and Melqart since Herodotus, the Pillars of Melqart in the temple near Gades/Gadeira (Modern Cadiz) have sometimes been considered to be the true pillars of Hercules.

Plato placed the mythial island of Atlantis beyond the Pillars of Hercules. Renaissance tradition says the pillars bore the warning Ne Plus Ultra (also non plus ultra, nothing further beyond), serving as a warning to sailors and navigators to go no further.

According to some Roman sources, while on his way to the garden of Hesperides on the island of Erytheria, Hercules had to cross the mountain that was once Atlas. Instead of climbing the great mountain, Hercules used this superhuman strength to smash through it. By doing so, he connected the Atlantic ocean to the Mediterranean Sean and formed the Strait of Gibraltar. One part split mountain is Gibraltar and the other is either Monte Hacho or Jebel Musa. These two mountains taken together have since then been known as the pillars of Hercules, though other natural feautres have been assoicated with the name.

Diodors Sicukus, however, held that, instead of smashing through an isthmus to create the Straits of Gibraltar, Hercules narrowed an already existing strait to prevent monsters from the Atlantic Ocean from entering the Mediterranean sea.

In some versions, Hercules instead built the two to hold the sky away from the earth, liberating Atlas from his damnation.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION CONCERNING POSTAGE & PACKING CHARGES -

EBAY changed their policy around 12 months ago, and unfortunately they now charge commission on
Postage & Packing charges. For some time now, I have included these charges in the bid/purchase price
on most items. In order to offer a 'free' postage service, I request that customers share the risk if selecting
Standard post

For this item, the default postage service is set for 'Signed For'.
This is suitable for items less than £50.

As the default service is one of the more secure services, such as the Signed-For or Special Delivery service ,
then should your item not be received after 14 days (28 days for International Mail) have elapsed, I will refund the
purchase price or replace the item.

I want you to be happy with my service, and ideally wish you to receive your item in perfect condition.

For information, items sent by standard mail, Royal Mail Compensation is limited to a maximum of £20.
Compensation for The Signed-For service is also limited to a maximum of £50 but of course a signature
is obtained. Items which are rare, listed in the SG catalogue and valued above this figure, or which
I would find difficult to replace if lost, should be sent using the Special Delivery service.

Please think carefully before placing your order and select the most secure service fit for the item you are
buying. Sometimes I insist on one of the more secure services being used, mainly for more expensive or
hard to replace items.

INTERNATIONAL POSTAGE offers no guarantees/insurance unless you buy the International Signed or
Tracked Services. Stamps will be fully insured. I will always obtain a Proof of Posting for stamps sent by
Standard Airmail. In this case, if stamps are lost, it is your responsibility to claim.

Please note that these are Royal Mail charges for the secure services offered and not mine.
They have become essential because of the number of potential false claims levied against the
Royal Mail and to comply with EBAY and PAYPAL's 'Trackable Policies'.
This protects both you, as the buyer, and me the seller. THANK YOU FOR READING.
