Tono powder is mainly used for wood "filling" (filling small holes in wood with Tono powder to flatten the surface), and is also used for rust lacquer such as Kintsugi ( It seems that many people use it when reusing plastic model solvent (tool cleaner) recently.
This time, we will introduce you to the unfamiliar “tonoko” in an easy-to-understand manner, including how to use it.
Simply put, tonoko is a finely powdered stone, and when written in kanji, it is [grinding powder], and it is the powder that comes out of the whetstone and the fired clay (yellow). The color changes depending on the raw material, and there are basically "red", "white" and "yellow". By making the raw material of the powder into a fine powder (fog powder) at the fine particle level, it can enter even the slightest gaps and fill in unevenness.
By filling the fine holes in the wood with this powder, the surface is flattened (compared to cosmetics, the pores are filled with a base).It has the effect of suppressing the absorption of paint, etc. It also has the effect of a natural insect repellent.
To begin with, the powder is a very fine stone powder. It is easy to scatter, so be careful where you work. Also, since it may get into your eyes and nose, be sure to ventilate well during work and be careful not to inhale the dust.
Sealing is the work of filling the wooden conduits (pipes that sucked up water and nutrients) with powder to flatten the surface. By doing this work, the surface becomes a smooth finish, and the paint can be applied evenly and beautifully.
<How to do it>
1. Mix the powder and water at a ratio of 1:1
2. Use a brush or the like to spread it over the entire surface of the wood (at this time, it is best to first apply it in a circular motion and then apply it again in a straight line along the grain).
3. Before it dries, rub the surface with a cloth and bury the powder in the conduit.
Four. After drying well in the shade, wipe off the powder on the surface with a cloth.
Five. Apply varnish or paint to finish.
There is a traditional Japanese technique called "Kintsugi" that uses lacquer to repair chipped or cracked ceramics. However, gold is actually used only for the finishing part, and lacquer is used for most of the restoration. In this kintsugi process, rust lacquer mixed with lacquer powder is used to fill in the final irregularities. This time, I will introduce how to make rust lacquer.
It is important to make sure that the ratio of Tono powder to Urushi is 10:8.
<How to make>
1. Use a spatula to crush a small amount of powder on a work board such as glass.
2. Add water little by little to the flour and knead well.
3. Add the lacquer little by little and knead well (aim for a rough paste)
Coarse powder that comes out when manufacturing whetstone powder in Yamashina, Kyoto.
The grain size is coarse, but when raw lacquer is kneaded together, it becomes a solid foundation, so it is often used when you want to thicken the lacquer base. Ground powder is a powder made by collecting slightly rough parts in the process of manufacturing grinding powder.
