Apparently the Jackson Raymond Company used the names of US Navy ships for their apparel, but I do not think there was any association with the owner and the ship. This company was registered in New York on August 22nd, 1944 as a branch of a foreign company whose US parent was in Pennsylvania at that time. I am assuming the original company is in London.
The tag reads:
Valiant
100% Virgin Wool
Tropical Worsted
Form Fitted
London Shrunk
Tailored by
Jackson
Raymond
Co. Inc.
There is a name "Lappin, H. L." as shown.
I have seen another identical shirt attributed to an 8th Air Force Pilot whose name on the top of the shirt was
"Coral Sea". I am not sure why they used US ships to name the shirts. The USS Valiant operated primarily
in the Panama Canal to Guantanamo Bay zone for the duration of the war.
