Cheney Duvall's attempt to help the mountain folk in the wilderness of the Ozarks had proven extremely difficult for both her and her male nurse, Shiloh Irons.  When they return to her home in New York, Cheney decides to to into private practice with Devlin Buchanan ~ the handsome, successful physician who had previously asked her to marry him.  His sponsorship offered her an excellent chance for success amongst the wealthiest residents of New York.

But dark rumors of plague reach New York well before the ship that brings Devlin Buchanan back from London.  A cholera outbreak in London had been reported in the early spring of 1866, and the deadly pestilence was not transported on the steamship Virginia.  Despite keeping the ship quarantined, it was simply a matter of time before the disease spread.

Cheney must decide what she truly values in life even as she prays for God's loving guidance.  Can she be content in a world of pomp and grandeur, or will the lure of the epidemic ~ and helping the truly needy ~ draw her back?
