History of Lacquered (Laksha) Industry in Sri Lanka

• The beginning of Lacquered industry in Sri Lanka was around 3^rd Century BC. But well known history suggests that the industry thrived much later with the patronage of Kings who ruled the country.

Lacquered (Laksha) Industry main types

There are two types of techniques used by the Lacquered craftsmen,

·         “Pattal Wada” – Wood work

• This is the initial step of the craft which involves the creation of the basic design.

·         “Nails work (Niyapothu Wada)” – Decorative work

• Once the initial design made, the next step is to apply colors and decorate it. This techniques is a fine, calm decorating process create with the use of fingers.
