One of the great chess players in American history was Harry Nelson Pillsbury, who exploded onto the world stage by winning his first every international tournament, Hastings, 1895.  He grew up in the Boston area, honing his game with the local players.

One of those players was Franklin K. Young. At one point, Mr. Young was champion of New England, and perhaps a sometime professor of military tactics at West Point; this latter item is somewhat obscure. Mr.  Young wrote several chess books wherein he tried to infuse into chess the tactics of the battlefield; this little volume is one of his efforts.

I would like to say that Mr. Young was the worst writer in chess history. Alas, that would not do him justice. He is the worst writer on any subject, in any language, in any country, in any time of history, past, present, or future; no creature, neither angel, demon, or beast, can surpass the badness of his writing. That's what makes his books collectible.

Back in the days before television, radio, or any electric entertainment, board games held sway over the leisure world. It is a how-to book on playing chess.
