David Mitchell is a tragic and mysterious figure in the chess world. He was active in the Philadelphia chess scene, writing a chess column for one of the major papers. He wrote two books on chess, this item is the less well-known book. It contains the rules of the game, along with a section of problems, several composed by Mitchell himself; he seems to have been of that rare breed of chess player who preferred problem composing to competition. There is a section in the back on four-handed chess.

He is tragic and mysterious, as in 1926, while on vacation in Maine, he simply disappeared. The presumption at the time was that, while of unsound mind, he walked into the Atlantic ocean, and was swept out to sea.
