He then traveled to Europe, easily best the top masters of the day. On his return to his native land, "Morphy Mania" gripped the country; Paul Morphy was the first sporting hero in American history. Hats, books, music, even cigars were named after Morphy. Alas, the guns trained on Fort Sumter soon spelled an end to the giddiness of Morphy Mania.
