This is the first anonymously published in exile publication by Walter Mehring. - On February 27, 1933, the day of the Reichstag fire, Mehring, who had been warned of his arrest, fled to Paris.
Written in satirical form as a response to the anti-Semitic 'Juden Sehen dich an", (Jews Are Watching You' by Third Reich propaganda ministry official Johann von Leers), the anti-Nazi work includes highly caustic biographies of 33 high ranking Nazis, including Adolf Hitler, Ernst Roehm, Herrmann Goering, Dr. Paul Joseph Goebbels, Rudolf Hess, Dr. Wilhelm Frick, Alfred Rosenberg, R. Walther Darre, among others.
The book measures 4 inches wide 6 inches tall and has a black cloth with gold lettering to cover. Written in German it was published by Editions Du Carrefour , Paris 1934. There is some light underlining in pencil on a number of pages. Cloth cover is lightly worn through at the corners. The original owner has signed the book to the inside folio (see photos). 227 pages in length.
Walter Mehring, a German writer, poet and self described 'anarchist' was one of the most important satirists during the Weimar Republic. He feared the rise of National Socialism and fled persecution by the Nazis, living in Vienna, Paris in the early 1930's and ultimately the US. Although written under a pseudonym, Mehring was hounded by the Austrian government for defaming the Fuhrer, and so escaped through Switzerland to Paris. He traveled throughout France during German occupation, finally making his way to Marseilles, and eventually, the United States..
This is a very rare period printed anti-fascist book. I have seen it advertised for as much as 1800 Euros in overseas. Great opportunity to own a hard to find title at a reasonable price.
