ROUND-Bottom Casseroles -

PYREX - ROUND-Bottom Casseroles -

A totally re-designed series of ROUND Casseroles were released in the late 1940’s to early 1950’s.

The 1950's brought about a re-design of casserole dishes. They became smoothly rounded - top to bottom - with rounded, full width handles. Four sizes were available – two smaller similar casseroles were released in the 1960s which had thick tab handles. More sizes were released.

This series of Crystal-Clear LIDDED CASSEROLES came in a stepped series of sizes. - Size, Casserole-MPN, Capacity; Lid-MPN - Extra-Small (Lidded Individual Size) - 080, 8-oz; 980-C; Small - 022, 1-QT; 622-C, 682-C; Medium - 023, 1 1/2-QT; 623-C, 683-C; Large - 024, 2-QT; 624-C, 684-C; AND Extra-Large (Roaster) – 026, 3 l, 3 QT; 687-C Roaster-Lid, 626-C, 686-C.

Over the years - the most popular size of casserole, of any shape, was the 1 ½-QT casserole.

Two Lid designs were available for most of these round-bottom casseroles. The flat-topped utility style of lid was designed to match exactly the form of the casserole & its handles – perfectly. The other lid was round, gently-domed with a knob-top-handle, which was flat on top allowing for perfect balance when inverted. There was also a High-Domed Roaster-Lid available for the largest of these casserole dishes.

PYREX Back-Stamps -

Backstamps - help in dating PYREX (brand format until the late 1990's) pieces. Backstamps evolved over time, adding more manufacturer's information while subtle changes were made in the format as well.

The 1950's brought more info – including “circled R” into the "concentric-circle" format.

In the embossed manufacturer's information, listed on the base of each piece, Imperial units were used until the late 1970's, after which all units were in Metric.

The late 1970's – wording was now "linear - rectangular-box" format – including metric capacities.

Lower case “pyrex” - appeared in the late 1990's.

pyrex - Corning Inc Pyrex was trademarked as PYREX in 1908. It was made of borosilicate glass. World Kitchen LLC “spun-off” of Corning in 1998 and licensed the Pyrex brand in lower case "pyrex". THIS Pyrex was made of less-costly soda-lime glass. So, currently, Pyrex made in the US (N America) is made of soda-lime glass but elsewhere it is made of the costlier borosilicate glass.

All hard-surface items are – well-washed in hot soapy water, rinsed, air-dried, photographed, wrapped in clean paper towel, packed, and placed into clean storage boxes until purchased.

Processing Blankets, Once in Hand -

All Blankets are washed in Wool-Safe Laundry Detergent; dried on warm heat, until dry; photographed from both sides; folded and bagged loosely, then placed into a storage cupboard having cedar shingles throughout the cupboard until sold.

There are videos and web-sites on line which explain how wool items can be re-stretched to their proper shape or size (or closer to) – as shrinkage happens when washed and dried.
