I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut song below.) ....... This is a rare January 23rd, 1950 "On Stage" playbill from the Pre-Broadway engagement of the new MORTON GOULD, HERBERT & DOROTHY FIELDS and ROUBEN MAMOULIAN musical "ARMS AND THE GIRL" at the Shubert Theatre in Boston. (The production would open February 2nd, 1950 at the Forty-Sixth Street Theatre in New York City and run for 134 performances.) ..... The musical starred NANETTE FABRAY and GEORGES GUETARY and featured PEARL BAILEY, JOHN CONTE, SETH ARNOLD, WILLIAM J. McCARTHY, FLORENZ AMES, JERRY MILLER, NORMAN WEISE, LULU BELLE CLARKE, STERLING HALL, JOSEPH CARUSO, PETER MICELI, MIMI CABANNE, JOAN KEENAN, DANIEL O'BRIEN, ROBERT RIPPY, ARTHUR VINTON, PETER GENNARO and ONNA WHITE ..... CREDITS: Book by HERBERT & DOROTHY FIELDS and ROUBEN MAMOULIAN based on the play "The Pursuit of Happiness" by LAWRENCE LANGNER and ARMINA MARSHALL; Music by MORTON GOULD; Lyrics by DOROTHY FIELDS; Sets designed by HORACE ARMISTEAD; Costumes designed by AUDRE; Choreographed by MICHAEL KIDD; Directed by ROUBEN MAMOULIAN; Produced by THE THEATRE GUILD ..... DETAILS: The twelve page playbill measures 6" X 9 1/8" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes and list of musical numbers, but no cast photos or bios ..... CUT SONG: The list of musical numbers includes "Johnny Cake" which was cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: This rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
