Kokeshi were originally from the northeastern region (Tohoku-chiho) of Japan. It is said that these doll were made in the middle of the Edo Period (1600-1808). Dolls have a simple trunk and head with a few painted lines to define the face. Older bodies often have a floral or ring design painted mainly in red and black. Later on, artists began adding well-known historical sights and scenes such as the Effel Tower on one of the 7 dolls pictured. All faces are one of a kind, although to some they may look the same. The older Kokeshi dolls were left unsigned. As time moved on, artists began signing the bottom of these dolls or included their signature in and around their artistic scenery.
