FEATURES

Origin - Dragon Stone, also known as Ohko Stone, is an argillaceous sedimentary rock, meaning it contains clay, clay minerals, and organic matter derived from muds and oozes. It forms through lithification, a process in which sediments are compacted under pressure, resulting in hardened solid rock.

Hardscape - Dragon Stone features a natural earthy brown color, varying from deep brown to slightly reddish hues depending on the individual piece. It is a brittle rock that can be easily broken into smaller fragments if needed. Its rough-textured, striated composition is heavily pitted, containing a significant amount of clay and dust.

Porous rock - The strated composition and heavily pitted texture make Dragon Stone highly porous, providing a large surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonise. This supports biological filtration and helps maintain more stable water parameters.

Environmental and water chemistry -  Dragon stone is considered neutral which does not influence your KH (carbonates & biocarbonates), or known as the buffering capacity of your tank or the GH (calcium & magnesium) or general hardness / mineral content of your water.

Perfect for - Natural style aquascapes, iwagumi scapes, and peaked / pointed scapes. Dragon stone can also be used for vivariums, paludariums and terrariums with epiphytes easily attaching to the rock surface. It can mimick eroded shore banks, stream beds and moutainous drop-offs.

SELECTION

Randomly selected -  Aquascape rock is selected at random to fulfil your order quantity. The shape and size may vary depending on availability and stock on hand.

Quantity 1 = 1KG - Simply choose the amount of rock (kg) by adjusting the order quantity.

Specific pieces - If you are after specific sizes (small, medium or large). Please include this detail in the 'note for buyer' section at checkout. While we try to accomadate requests, this is dependent on the available stock on hand.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Cleaning -  Aquascape rock will require a wash prior to use. Being a natural product aquascape rock may contain traces of dust and dirt requiring additional washing and scrubbing.

Order amounts - Rock by nature is a dense material, therefore 1KG of rock does not equate to a large amount.  A rule of thumb is 1KG equates to the following:

1KG = 8 - 12 smaller rocks (+ - approx. 5 - 10cm pieces).

1KG = 2 - 3 medium rocks (+ - approx. 10 - 20cm pieces).

1KG = 1 - 2 large rock (+ - approx. >15cm  pieces).

Calculating rock amount - Use the following guide to calculate approximate rock amount.

Aquscape rock Bulk density factor
Lava stone 0.7
South seas base rock 0.8 - 0.9
Dragon stone 1.0
Texas holey rock 1.1
Seiryu, Rosy Cloud 1.1 - 1.2
Mountain stone 1.2

Calculate the estimated weight of rock by using the volume of your tank (litres) and dividing by the aquascape factor of 6. Multiply this by the bulk density factor above.

eg: 20L aquarium / aquascape factor (6) = 3.3KG of rock * multiplied by the bulk density factor above for the chosen rock.

* This guide is an estimation only. It is the responsibility of the customer to do further research to calculate rock requirements.

PLEASE NOTE - Aquascape rock pictured in the listing display photo is only a representation of what the rock looks like. It is not the rock pieces you will receive as they are selected at random to meet your ordered weight.
