Craftsman Honing Steel

Original Wooden Handle

19-Inches

There was a time, and not that long ago, when a person was looking for quality tools the place to go to was Sears and the Craftsman line of tools. The quality of the Craftsman line of tools was and continues to be exceptional. Sadly, the Craftsman line of tools is going away. Furthermore, more and more Sears stores close each and every year. There is no wonder all Craftsman tools are highly sought after.

One of the biggest misconceptions about the particular type of kitchen tool you see above is the belief that it's a knife sharpener. It doesn't help that many manufacturers sell their honing steels as such. But a honing steel is not a sharpener. Ridged, rod-like honing steels, or "stropping irons," as they're sometimes called, do not sharpen blades; they realign them and remove a burr that is created during sharpening. Likewise, they can give a quick edge between your regular sharpening schedule. This is similar to a barber stopping a single edge razor on a leather strop.

Edge maintenance is a preventive measure: It helps keep sharp knives sharp and safe. There is an old adage that a knife that is not sharp is not safe.

We have designated this item as "Unknown" as to which country it was made in since there is no marking. However, back in the day, all Craftsman tools were made in the USA.

The exact age of this item is unknown. In fact, we have never seen a Craftsman Honing Steel before. We did find pictures of a similar honing steel stating that it was from the 1950's, but we can not verify that. If you magnify the third photo you should be able to clearly see the Craftsman logo. This item is in outstanding condition. There are a few minor dings to the steel itself and to the handle. Overall, this item is very solid and should provide many years of use. Comes with a unique square hanger. Please see all photos.
