Schwinn uses a unique metal - Zamak - as the base material for most of its hardware. Zamak was developed in the United States in 1929 as a better material than zinc, which itself is a brittle, low strength, and low hardness metal. The name Zamak itself is an acronym of the German words for the metals Zink (zinc), aluminum, Magnesium and Kupfer (copper). Today there are several different Zamak alloys. Schwinn hardware is made uses a grade of Zamak which has 1% copper added to make it even stronger and harder than other Zamak grades.
